Grammatically Unexpected Character Export Error in AccountLinx

When exporting records from AccountLinx, you may receive an error message indicating 'XSLT conversion failed' that appears like below:

Error Description: XSLT conversion failed. Error: Well-formedness violation: Character #xD83D is grammatically unexpected

Cause

The cause of the error is generally an unexpected character associated with a time record. The most common is an emoji being entered into an employee's comment, either by a time editor or the employee. Many applications have a standard set of characters they can understand and save. If there is a character it cannot understand, it will reject it despite ExakTime being able to use it.

We recommend that employees use standard language and characters to ensure compatibility and legibility to prevent any issues related to data and special characters.

Solution(s)

Update AccountLinx

With AccountLinx, we try to consider potential unexpected characters and ignore them so you can have a seamless AccountLinx export experience. If you are using an older version of AccountLinx, you should update it to the latest publicly available version as AccountLinx may have already been updated for your selected exporter. For assistance with this, you can refer to How to Update AccountLinx/SyncLinx.

After updating AccountLinx to the latest version and a successful import, it is suggested that your employees not enter emojis to prevent any future unforeseen issues. You could recommend to your employees to not enter emojis so their time records appear professional in the event that they need to be reviewed.

If you still encounter the issue despite being on the latest publicly available version, you can try the temporary solution below.

Remove the Emoji

The temporary solution to correct this issue is to edit the employee's time record comment and remove the emoji the same way you would edit any other time record comment.

How it Appears on Timecard

It will appear like below on the employee's timecard.

How it Appears on Touch Detail Report

If you have numerous employees with comments and are unsure of which time record has an emoji in the time record comment, you can use the Employee Touch Detail report to quickly review your employee's time records.

Before generating the Employee Touch Detail report, you should enable "Show Incomplete Records" and "Show Comments" from the Report Specific Options like below:

The report will display emojis like the example below depending on your browser.
