The HRIS will integrate with Unum's Plane.Biz Version 1.5. The employee will begin an enrollment event and elect their Voluntary Benefits by clicking a link in their event that takes them to Unum's Plan.Biz system. This enables direct enrollment in the carrier's system.
Upon completion of enrollment, the enrollee will log out of the Plane.Biz System and seamlessly continue their enrollment event in the HRIS.
Step 1: Gather Information
When configuring the UNUM connection you will need to reach out to the assigned UNUM representative for this client. The UNUM rep will send you an email back once the set up is completed on their end with the necessary information required to start your build. The email will look like the below:

Enrolling
Once you are satisfied that the demo case matches your offering, you may begin enrolling employees in production.
To Finalize your Enrollment
- Log in as a case manager to the plane.biz site when enrollment is complete.
- Click Reports and run an Enrollment Statistical Summary.
- Click the “Processing Notification” button.
- Complete the form by entering the number of applications, the annual premium, your e-mail address and any additional comments you have.
- Click on the “Submit” button
Please note: You will receive an e-mail notification within 1 business day stating that New Business can begin processing. If you do not receive this notification, contact us at 1-866-615-5263.
Step 2: Configure Package
Once you have received the Case Summary, you may configure the Package within the HRIS.
- Navigate to Settings > Benefit Management
- Selecting a package (existing package) or Create Package (New Package)
- Setup Voluntary Benefits
- Select Unum Voluntary Benefits
- Enter the Case ID.
- Select the Enrollment Type: Self Service
- Select the Unum Enroller Authentication Type: VoiceOther
- You may Require Enrollment/Waive of the Unum Enabled benefits by checking the box next to "Require Enrollment/Waive". This will force enrollees to enter the Unum Plane.Biz Platform and Elect or Waive their voluntary benefits before continuing their event.
Once you have saved the configuration of the UNUM Voluntary Benefits, you may continue on to Step 3.
Step 3: Configure Benefit
After configuring the UnumCredentials at the Package Level, you will need to set up new benefits in the HRIS matching Unum's voluntary benefits as provided in the Case Summary / Portfolio Summary.
The Benefit Code must be set to the corresponding Product Code found in the Case Summary / Portfolio Summary.
You must check the box stating "This Benefit will be enrolled via an Integrated Voluntary Benefit System..."
Once you have set up each benefit provided in your Case Summary / Portfolio Summary, continue on to Step 4.
Step 4: Configure Employee Fields
The Unum Benefit Platform typically requires 4 pieces of information associated with an Employee, and each can be found in the Case Summary / Portfolio Summary provided by the carrier.
Departments
When the enrollment case is initially configured by Unum, a list of departments will be provided. These departments must be setup in the HR application. Departments must be entered into the HR system and must match exactly how they are provided by Unum. Departments are entered on the department entry screen.
- Navigate to Setup > Setup Properties
- Hover over Field Value Setup and click Departments
Once the departments have been added, each employee in the HR system must be assigned to a department either by selecting the department on the employee demographic screen, or by importing the department values using the custom import utility.
Bill Segmentation
When the enrollment case is initially configured by Unum, a list of Bill Segmentations will be provided. These Bill Segmentations must be setup in the HR application. Bill Segmentation must be entered into the HR system and must match exactly how they are provided by Unum. Because Bill Segmenations are not a generic data type in the HR system, they are entered as a user defined lookup field.
Once the Bill Segmentations have been added, each employee in the HR system must be assigned to a location either by selecting the location on the employee demographic screen, or by importing the location values using the custom import utility.
The HR system requires that you use User Defined L13 as the custom look up field to store the Bill Segmentation value.
- Navigate to Setup > Setup Properties
- Hover over Field Value Setup and click User Defined L13
Bill Subdivision
When the enrollment case is initially configured by Unum, a list of Bill Subdivisions will be provided. These Bill Subdivisions must be setup in the HR application. Bill Subdivisions must be entered into the HR system and must match exactly how they are provided by Unum. Because Bill Subdivisions are not a generic data type in the HR system, they are entered as a user defined lookup field.
Once the Bill Subdivisions have been added, each employee in the HR system must be assigned to a Bill Subdivision either by selecting the Bill Subdivision on the employee demographic screen, or by importing the Bill Subdivision values using the custom import utility.
The HR system requires that you use User Defined L14 as the custom look up field to store the location value.
- Navigate to Setup > Setup Properties
- Hover over Field Value Setup and click User Defined L14
Unum Class
When the enrollment case is initially configured by Unum, a list of job classes will be provided. These locations must be setup in the HR application. Locations must be entered into the HR system and must match exactly how they are provided by Unum. Because locations are not a generic data type in the HR system, they are entered as a user defined lookup field.
Once the job classes have been added, each employee in the HR system must be assigned to a job class either by selecting the job class on the employee demographic screen, or by importing the job class values using the custom import utility.
The HR system requires that you use User Defined L15 as the custom look up field to store the job class value.
Step 5: Configure Event
The events which will allow for Voluntary Benefit Elections must be configured to enable enrollment through the Unum Benefit Platform.
- Navigate to Setup > Setup Properties
- Hover over Employee Portal Setup and click Employee Portal
- Click the Events tab.
- Click Benefits Verification.
- Click the Steps tab.
- Scroll down to find Unum Connect and Check the box.
Step 6: Test the Employee Experience
Now that the HRIS has been configured to integrate with your carrier's Unum's Benefit System, navigate to an employee home page to test the experience.
First, select the applicable event and click Begin Event.
Complete each step in the event until you reach the Benefits tab.
Once you reach the Benefits Step, you will note that the Unum Benefits will not be elected through the HRIS. This is because we checked the box to enroll this benefit through a third-party website in Unum: Step 3 - Configure Benefit.
Continue your elections until you reach the UNUM tab. Employees can click "I wish to Enroll in voluntary benefits with UNUM" or "I do not wish to Enroll in voluntary benefits with UNUM" to either be taken to the UNUM Enrollment System or continue to the next step in their event.
